Pi Day is March 14. While “pi” refers to the mathematical concept, we think pies are equally worthy of celebration! Just for fun we thought we’d explore the state’s delicious options for this popular pastry.
Achatz Handmade Pie Company: Achatz Handmade Pie Company (AHPC) in Chesterfield is known for its use of locally sourced ingredients. Michigan fruits are some of the best in the country, so bakers don’t need to look far for the freshest fillings. Their Michigan 4-Berry pie, which uses Michigan blueberries, blackberries, cherries and raspberries, is a must try. Feast your eyes on their apple pie, which uses thinly-sliced Northern Spy Apples.
Grand Traverse Pie Company: This local chain of pie shops has a location in Midland. Sit back and relax with a slice of pie and your favorite coffee. You can’t go wrong with a slice or two of the Honey Apple Pie, Old Mission Cherry or Lakeshore Berry. Lunch favorites include quiches, soups, pot pie by the slice, salads, sandwiches and wraps.
Crane’s Pie Pantry Restaurant & Winery: A Western Michigan favorite, after a visit here you’ll think you’ve died and gone to heaven. Crane’s Famous Pies include such flavors as blueberry, red raspberry and chocolate pecan. Got a serious sweet tooth? Indulge further with breads, cinnamon rolls, muffins, cookies and apple cider donuts. Come for the food and stay for the atmosphere. The memorabilia and antiques make you feel like you’ve stepped back into the last century.
Jawor Brothers Blueberries: This family-owned establishment in Ravenna was started in 1962 by Carl Jawor Sr. and his wife, Millie. Today, the farm is run by Carl Sr. and his sons, Mike and Jeff. They are known for their selection of hand-crafted pies as well as blueberry products, as their name suggests. Favorites include blueberry jam, honey and even salsa!
Pepper Mill Restaurant: Gladwin-based Pepper Mill Restaurant is a family-style sit down establishment that serves an American traditional breakfast, lunch and dinner. Oh, and did we mention pie? They are made fresh daily by co-owner Jean. Flavors run the gamut from traditional apple to walnut fudge.
We suggest you go on a pie adventure and report back to us on your favorites.
